BREAKING: Jets hire Joe Douglas as GM

As the Jets GM search concludes, is this the right move.

When the Jets fired their old GM a few weeks ago, many fans questioned the motives of Adam Gase. Now that Adam Gase has his guy, will he silence the doubters, and bring the first Lombardi to Gang Green, since Brodway’s Joe’s historic run.

Who is he?

Joe Douglas is one of the more respected talent evaluators in the NFL, with his time with the Ravens, Bears, and the Eagles, Douglas has formed a reputation around the NFL, with strong drafts in all three places.

Under Douglas, you should expect to have stronger drafts, and something different from Maccagnan, finding mid-late round gems.

Was he the best Candidate?

The Jets interviewed: Eagles VP of personal Joe Douglas, Saints director of pro scouting Terry Fontenot, Seahawks executive Scott Fitterer, and Bears assistant director of player personal Champ Kelly.

Though some of the candidates had good reputation in NFL circles, Joe Douglas is the clear #1 in this group. Champ Kelly and Fitterer, deserve and probably will one day have a general manager job in the NFL, but their accomplishments match nothing like Douglas’.

There was some speculation that Vikings George Paton would interview, and even though he would’ve been a very strong candidate, Joe Douglas has the edge on him.

Who’s coming to the Jets with Douglas?

There has been speculation of the Jets trying to hire a “big name” to be Joe Douglas’ right hand man. Here are a few options the Jets should consider and that would be reasonable.

Daniel Jeremiah:

Daniel Jerimiah of the NFL network is a very talented talent evaluator, he spent time with the Ravens and Eagles, and crossed paths with Joe Douglas with the Ravens. Now the lead draft analyst with the NFL network, will DJ follow in Mayock’s path and explore other opportunities in the NFL?

Todd McShay/Louis Riddick:

Two promonent ESPN names, McShay who has been with ESPN for almost fourteen years, hasn’t really gotten as much GM buzz. However, he is good friends with Joe Douglas so this could be a real pathway for McShay in the NFL.

Louis Riddick another prominent ESPN member, has had a lot of GM buzz, due to the fact that he has 12 years of work as a talent evaluator, though he may not be the “perfect fit” for this job, his resume speaks for it’s self.

Andy Weidl

This is the person I am betting the most money on, the only concern is will Philadelphia let him leave, because he is still under contract with the team. Weidl has been Douglas’ right hand man. He was also in Baltimore, and was the guy who found Timmy Jernigan and scouted him. If Philadelphia let’s him leave, he is most likely getting a job with the Jets.
