Draft Grades: The Top 10

With the opening night of the draft in the books it’s time to start rushing to judgement and assigning grades to each team’s haul so far. Which picks were great value? Who Reached? Let’s break it down Below

Note: Grades are based off of my Draft board, scheme fit, and team need

1. Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma

After months of lowering Josh Rosen’s trade value, this was the only play they could make. With that said, Murray is a dynamic player and a perfect fit for Kingsbury’s offense. Grade: A-

2. San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio State

With a QB going #1, the 49ers take the top player on board at a position of need. Grade: A+

3. New York Jets: Quinnen Williams, DT, Alabama

Like the 49ers before them, the Jets hang tight and end up with a “sure thing ” level player, and a scheme match made in heaven. Grade A+

4. Oakland Raiders: Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson

The Raiders said this would be a surprise, and I shrugged it off. Time for me to eat crow, as this was a shocker! Ferrell is a good player but the #23 player on my big board going ahead of Josh Allen, Brian Burns, and Montez Sweat seems like a major reach. Grade: C+

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Devin White, LB, LSU

White is an instant impact player, the type of the leader that will elevate those around him. Huge win for the Bucs. Grade A+

6. New York Giants: Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

I’ve already written about this, and I likely will write more about it in the coming days, but to pass on Josh Allen, Ed Oliver, and Dwayne Haskins for Daniel Jones looks like an all-time reach. Grade D-

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Josh Allen, LB, Kentucky

If you would have told the Jags that Allen would be there at pick #7, they would have you committed to an asylum. Grade A+

8. Detroit Lions: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

The Lions tackled a big position of need with a safe pick and my #11 player in Hockenson. The only concern here is the team’s history of misses on first round tight ends. Grade B+

9. Buffalo Bills: Ed Oliver, DT, Houston

Big win for the Bills!! They take the #3 player on my board all the way down at #9. Their young, extremely high upside team is starting to take shape. Grade A+

10. Pittsburgh Steelers (via trade with Broncos): Devin Bush, LB, Michigan

The Steelers finally have their next Ryan Shazier in the ultra athletic Bush. They traded a 2nd and a 3rd to make the move up, but all in all this is an amazing pick for the team. Grade A-
