Giants vs. Cowboys: What Does Big Blue Need To Do To Win

Can you smell it!? Football Season is back baby! and we are in for a treat Week One with the Giants going to Jerry’s world to take on the Cowboys. The Cowboys are a -7.5 point favorite for this game and they cannot wait to see their newly paid stars show what they can do. Meanwhile the Giants are going to rely on some fresh faces to fill major holes. This game can truly go either way.

The Cowboys have paid MLB Jalen Smith, OT La’el Collins, and most notably RB Ezekiel Elliott and are looking to win big this year, especially with Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott looking for big deals as well. Zeke wasn’t with the team this entire off season, just signing his deal early Wednesday morning, I am curious to see what type of shape the guy is in and how he reacts to his first taste of full game action this year.

The Giants on the other hand are coming into this season with some new leaders and a different culture. They traded star WR Odell Beckham Jr. and in return got a phenomenal and athletic SS Jabrill Peppers who is native to the area and is making his presence felt as a leader for this Giants Defense. Along with Peppers the Giants used several picks on young DB’s most notably DeAndre Baker and Corey Ballentine who figure to see a lot of playing time in this one. The Giants are the under dogs for a reason and have a ton to prove this season. The Giants need the following players to step up for them to win this game and set the tone for the season.

Players To Watch

Dexter Lawrence

Big Dex was the Giants second 1st round pick of this April’s Draft and the large Defensive Tackle figures to factor in immediately. Dex has a ways to go in terms of pass rushing but he is a heck of a run stopper. The Giants run defense suffered dramatically after trading away Damian Snacks Harrison. Dexter Lawrence stands at 6’4″ and a whopping 342 pounds, the main reason for taking this kid in the draft is to stop Zeke from running all over them. So the first big key is Dex clogging the lanes and slowing down Dallas’ elite running game. He needs to force Dak to beat the Giants defense

Janoris Jenkins

Jackrabbit will spend most of this game shadowing the Cowboys top receiving threat Amari Cooper. Last season Jackrabbit won the battle between the two limiting Cooper to 5 catches for a measly 31 yards,
If Jenkins can keep Cooper to similar numbers it will allow the Giants to send more pressure and allow their linebackers to worry more about the running game.

The Offensive Line

The Giants offensive line has been one of the worst units in the NFL for the last few years but with the addition of Kevin Zeitler this group will take a giant step forward. The progression of “Hog Molly” Guard Wil Hernandez will also be huge as it will allow Nate Solder to focus more on his own responsibilities. New comer Mike Remmers figures to add some stability to the Right Tackle spot. Center Jon Halapio was great last year before suffering an injury, he is healthy and looking to pick up where he left off. If this group can create lanes for Saquan and protect Eli the Giants will be able to control the clock and control the game!

Evan Engram

The former first round pick is in a prime position to make himself a house hold name this season. The athletic Tight End is no longer in the shadow of OBJ and can be a match up nightmare for defenses. Engram will have to be a reliable target for Eli and cause some disruption in the Cowboys secondary if the Giants expect to move the ball against this stout front 7. I expect Engram to do a lot of his damage in the play action game. With so much attention on Saquan, Engram has the sneaky speed to find himself into open spaces consistently throughout this contest.

The Giants will have to control the clock and keep this Cowboys offense off the field if they want to win. If the Giants go 3 and out consistently they will get destroyed but if they can get at least a few first downs each drive and get a few 3rd down stops they can be in a great position to win this football game. This Giants teams new attitude and team first mentality might be enough for them to catch a Cowboys team sleeping. I am beyond hyped for this game! LETS GO GIANTS FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!!!
