Jets QB Preview: Darnold’s Breakout Year?

Though Quarterback was always a question for the Jets, they found their guy. What about the others?

Sam Darnold:

When the Jets drafted their man in Sam Darnold number three in the 2018 NFL draft, they knew that he was their man. Last season Darnold showed some sparks, however, this year is going to be big for him. Last season, Darnold threw for 2,865 yards 17 TD’s and 15 INT’s. Those stats aren’t bad for a rookie, but if he has another year like this with a better supporting cast, Jets fans will not be happy.

Trevor Siemian:

In my opinion, Siemian is one of the more underated quarterbacks in the NFL, he won the starting quarterback job in Denver, and helped lead them to a 10-6 season. After that season, we saw some sparks by Siemian. However, when Gary Kubiak left and Vance Joesph came in, Siemian played worse. Last season, he backed up Kirk Cousins in Minnesota, but saw no playing time. Even though he hasn’t had great playing time recently, he was a pro bowl level quarterback in 2016. God forbid if Sam Darnold gets injured, Siemian can play the role.

Davis Webb:

Even though Webb was a third round pick in 2017, he has not seen any playing time, even though Ben Mcadoo should’ve picked Webb over Geno Smith. But, Webb has been a major disappointment in the NFL. For the Jets, there is a QB competition between him and Falk for the QB 3 (practice squad QB.)

Luke Falk:

After a great career at Washington State, Falk fell to the 6th round in the 2018 draft. And in slightly over a year, he’s been on three different NFL teams. He was drafted to the Titans in 2018, but he got released after the preseason. Adam Gase and the Miami Dolphins claimed him off of waivers the day after he got released. But, after Gase got fired and the acquisition of Josh Rosen, Falk got released. Lucky for him, Adam Gase and the Jets claimed him. I think that Falk has a lot to prove, but it seems that Coach Gase really likes him.

Overall:

There isn’t a huge battle here, I think it’s safe to say that Darnold and Siemian will be the QB 1 and QB 2, the question is what will they do with the third spot. If Webb or Falk really impress in the preseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep a third quarterback on the roster, to ensure another team wouldn’t claim them and risk putting them on the practice squad.
