NFL Draft: Giants Shock the world; Take Jones over Allen

With the number six pick in the 2019 draft the New York Giants came on the clock with a difficult decision to make. Would they take the potential top pass rusher in the draft in Josh Allen, or would they address the Quarterback position with highly touted QB prospect Dwayne Haskins?

If you watched the draft, you already know which direction they went with this pick. In spite of weeks of claiming to seek a pass rusher at number six, they addressed Quarterback. Haskins had to wait until pick 15 however because the Giants picked Duke QB Daniel Jones.

Why it Makes Sense

As I wrote in mock draft this morning when I predicted this pick, the biggest factor in this was going to be the transition from Eli Manning. Ownership has placed a priority on ease of transition to the next starting QB. Jones’ ties to the Manning family and is reportedly close to Eli. Jones has is also known as very mature and seen as mentally capable of learning the position quickly.

Why it actually doesn’t

While Jones possesses good size and mobility, his lack or arm strength, and consistent accuracy leave with a late second/ early third round grade on my board. Jones is also perceived as the fourth best QB in this class and many (including me) have as the fifth. In all honesty this could end up as an all-time reach, due to his ability relative to where he was drafted. I hope that I am wrong but despite two other quality picks in this year’s first round, The Giants appear to be this year’s big loser.
