NFL Week 5 Preview: What to watch for

How should i sum up the first quarter of football? Maybe..an anomaly? Who would have thought we’d go into Week 5 talking about a two NFC South teams in the Saints & Panthers winning back to back games without their starting quarterbacks? How bout an undefeated 49ers team after an abysmal season last year? A Gardner Minshew led Jaguars?! It’s a lot of to wrap our heads around but let’s try to stay sane. Time to dive in to the 2nd quarter of football.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Carolina Panthers

Battle of the backups

Garnder Minshew is producing some unfortold magic sans an injured Nick Foles and faces his counterpart Kyle Allen ( super boy? ) subbing for Cam Newton. Respectively both defenses will challenge the opposing QB with the slight advantage going to Carolina after holding the Texans offense to 10 points. But it’s not all golden. The Panthers have a slew of players on the injury report with three of them being defensive starters. Safe to make way for more Minshew Madness?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New Orlean Saints

The Bucs in first place?

Yes, the Tampa Buccaneers have a chance to claim first place in the NFC South if they can manage to leave the Superdome with a win…..Jamies Winston in first place? Oh God….

I’ll save my ill feelings for the former Florida State quarterback. Bruce Arians may be saving what’s left of his career. The Bucs are averaging a solid 30 pts a game and may have the secret to containing Alvin Kamara with the first ranked rush defense yiedling 60 yards a game. As for the Saints, they’ve proved they can win games against stout teams without Drew Brees. But what worries me is they may not rise up for the Bucs as they did for the Cowboys.

Winston in first place? Oh God….

Buffalo Bills @ Tennessee Titans

From worst to first…..by default

The Titans can find themselves tied for first place in the AFC South as the Colts, Texans & Jaguars each face teams they could suffer losses to. And the chips still seem to be falling their way as Josh Allen is still on concussion protocol and questionable for Sunday. But as good as an opportunity this is, the Titans can easily botch this as well.

As for the Bills, defensively they played lights out despite the loss to the Patriots in Week 4. We knew they wouldn’t win the division but we can atleast expect to keep pace in the wild card race. What we do know is, their games won’t be won on offense, and Sunday will be know different. Expect a defensive tug of war.

Greenbay Packers @ Dallas Cowboys

Aaron…Freaking…Rodgers

I won’t believe for a second that because Davante Adams is ruled out that Aaron Rodgers won’t leave AT&T stadium with a win. I mean….he beat the Cowboys on one leg in the divisional playoffs in 2015 at Lambeau. As fans we may have to admit that he just has the Cowboys number.

The Cowboys unfortunately ran into a Saints team out for blood dating back to week 11 of last year. The offense had a bad day at the office, but give the Saints credit; their defense showed up to play. Now back to this week. The Cowboys are at home with a great chance for OC Kellen Moore to ease the minds of Cowboy fans after witnessing 10 points scored. Tyron Smith is out but Michael Gallup returns reestablishing fire power that was missed in Dallas’s offense. Dak is still on a mission to prove he’s worth the long term investment of $30 million plus. Can he best the Packers third ranked pass defense?

Cleveland Browns @ Sanfransico 49ers

Look in the mirror

Let’s be honest. As much as we’re trying to figure out who the Browns are, were wondering the same for the 49ers.

This game features some enticing matchups on both sides, notably Odell Beckham vs. Richard Sherman. But all eyes will be on Jimmy Garrapolo & Baker Mayfield. Neither QB has jumped off the screen this year and have benefited more from the pieces around them than their individual play. However both teams are finding their run games and can roll their QB play through that.

I’m not going to give a score for this game, but i do like the 49ers defense. Question is, which gunslinger makes the least amount of mistakes? Can the Browns string together wins to maintain first place and be taken seriously? Whats to say of the 49ers if they go 4-0?

Question…questions…questions…
